Sanding narrow concave and convex profiles can be somewhat aggravating. Not so with the Vario-Pro Profile Sander. This sanding accessory enables you to sand just about any profile, including crown, chair, base, casing, and panel. You can also use it to sand round stock.
The Vario-Pro is essentially a sanding block with a unique, adjustable base that confirms to virtually any concave or convex profile. The sander itself is very compact, measuring 2" x 2-3/4" x 5" and weighing only 9 ounces. The body is made of a durable, high impact ABS plastic.
Thin spring-loaded plates confirm to concave or convex profiles
In the bottom of the Vario-Pro are a series of thin, spring-loaded plates made of high impact PVC. When pressed onto a profile, the plates conform to its shape. A locking knob holds the plates firmly in place once the desired profile has been set.
Velcro strips hold H&L sandpaper into the sander
On either side of the Vario-Pro are strips of Velcro that hold hook and loop sandpaper firmly in place. The sander comes with two sheets each of 120-grit, 180-grit, and 220-grit sand paper. You can purchase sheets of H&L sandpaper in a variety of grits from most building supply stores and cut them to size.
Super convenient for sanding narrow profiles
I found it quite easy to use the Vario-Pro. I begin by placing a sanding sheet on the bottom of the Vario-Pro, but only attach one side to a Velcro strip. Then I press the base against the profile so that it confirms to the profiles' shape, while simultaneously pulling the loose side of the sanding sheet onto it's Velcro strip. Then I lock the base plates by turning the locking knob. Works like a charm.
The Vario-Pro is very comfortable to use. All the edges are nicely rounded and there are finger indentations on the side that provide for a secure grip.
Because of the narrow base on the Vario-Pro you're limited to sanding widths of about 1-1/4". For wide mouldings you would need to sand in sections.
In general, I found the Vario-Prot worked best on profiles with gradual curves, as in the photo on the right, less so on profiles with sharp, crisp edges.
The Vario-Pro Profile Sander is the quickest and most convenient way I know of to hand sand concave and convex profiles. With a list price of $35 the Vario-Pro it pays for itself quickly. Considering how efficiently it works, I think any woodworker will find it a valuable addition to their sanding arsenal.
