The THz-33 is a 3-in-1 Transmission HAZE & Color Meter and is our Advanced model with a three-year warranty designed with superior accuracy and simplicity in mind. This instrument was meant for a discerning audience who require a better than entry-level instrument yet has more value than the older traditional instruments costing 2X or more. This instrument's accuracy and repeatability specifications rival the more expensive designs from Europe at 2X the price. The TrHz-33 can easily be used for both vertical and horizontal positions depending on its use by the operator with no required modifications. The design is sleek and has the latest advancements in optics to perform as a Spectrophotometer and Haze and Transmittance instrument. Thus, the MIZA TrHz-33 Transmission HAZE Color meter model is a special instrument with three measurement capabilities, namely; Transmission, Haze & Color. The TrHz-22, our entry-level, only has Transmission and Haze, while our TrHz-55 has everything the TrHz-33 has plus a Clarity measurement.
Transparency is a vague description of a material's characteristic of its see-through capability or clearness of the medium, for both liquids and solids. Different products applications require different solutions. Packaging for a meat product in a grocery store should be extra clear or transparent, while plastic bags are semi-opaque to keep their contents private. Transparency involves the combination of reflection, transmission, and absorption of the translucent material. Another characteristic also visible to the human eye is the haziness or cloudiness of a material. Haziness or HAZE can be characterized by the scattering of light. Scattering is also divided into Narrow and Wide-angle scattering. The TrHz-33 haze meter measures the latter or wide-angle scattering. Wide-angle scattering occurs at >2.5° from the perpendicular to the material. ASTM D 1003 and ISO 13468 measurement methods present different measurements. Note this instrument measures liquid's haze and transmittance in a horizontal position.
Standard: ASTM D1003
ASTM D1003 refers to two test procedures that cover the evaluation of specific light-transmitting and wide-angle scattering properties. The two test methods under ASTM are Test Method A and B. Test Method A uses a Haze meter while Test Method B uses a spectrophotometer. The better and more accurate test method is A which uses a Haze Meter. These results offer slightly better values and have greater repeatability. The MIZA Model TrHz-33 uses the total hemispherical luminous transmittance. This is accomplished by placing the planar product against the entrance port of the sphere which we call the "Haze Port". ASTM D 1003 uses illuminants A and C while ISO 13468 uses Illuminant D65.
Quality Control personnel use these Haze meters to standardize the quality for product specification purposes.
The MIZA Transmission HAZE TrHz-33 Meter by Imbotec easily measures all translucent materials. These include plastic packaging film, clear PVC, Liquids, LCD panels, glass, and more.
The TrHz-33 comes standard with a 21mm opening Aperture and a measurement spot of 16.5mm in diameter. Optionally we also have apertures of 10mm, 7mm, and a 5mm aperture for smaller or minimally curved surfaces.
We also have a model for VERY small objects and for curved or tubular/cylindrical translucent products, "TrHz-77". This haze meter is a specialized model with slit openings of either a 1 or 2mm wide x 21mm long aperture opening. Custom measurement sizes are available upon request. Small apertures are used to measure curved samples like a fluorescent tube as an example.

Transmission Haze Materials Measured
This instrument was designed as a direct response to laboratory requirements, thus the TrHz-33 was developed to measure liquids, films and thin sheet products quickly and easily - use the Thin Film Sample Holder. Just lay the sample on our aperture ring and place the larger ring over it to create a taught firm sample on the measurement surface and press the measurement button.
What is Transmission Haze?
Transmission Haze is a measurement of thelight scattering characteristicsof a material. Haze can be due to suspended particles or contaminants within a sample or fine surface texture & contamination. Haze is measured in percent. Haze is calculated by dividing the Diffuse Transmission by the Total Transmission in percentage. Normally CIE Illuminant C is used for these calculations.
Haze measurement can be used to quantify the optical characteristics of plastics and packaging films.
In packaging applications hazy films may reduce a consumer's quality perception as packaged products with haze-affected films can look cloudy and indistinct.
For plastics with haze, the visibility of the test material becomes more apparent and the contrast of viewed objects is reduced.
